How you can prepare yourself for surgery

Amanda Chapman a Deputy Sister for Pre-operative Assessment at KGH talks about how you can prepare yourself for surgery.
 
Having an operation or procedure can be worrying and we are looking for ways to ensure the process is made easier and less frightening for you, your family, friends and carers.
 
There are practical steps you can undertake before surgery to ensure you are as well as can be before an operation or procedure such as undertaking exercise, maintaining a good diet, reducing weight if needed, and stopping smoking.
 
For any patients who are due to have sedation, or a local or general anaesthetic, for any procedure or operation, this event is your opportunity to hear how physically and mentally you can best prepare yourself to reduce anxiety and worry.
 

Dying Matters: let’s talk about it!’

A chance to learn more about death and dying with end-of-life experts.  Aiming to help demystify common health conditions and difficult subjects whilst providing practical support.
 
The event is introduced by KGH Staff Governor, Jayne Chambers.  Event speakers are Sarah Parry, Transformation Lead Nurse for Palliative & End of Life Care, and Dr Fiona Wiseman, Palliative Medicine Consultant. Helping you find the words to have an important conversation about wishes, what happens to make people comfortable and much more.
 

Skin deep: skin complaints or skin cancer

Skin deep – how to manage common skin complaints and avoid skin cancer. The event was designed to help identify problems and answer common skin complaint questions.
 
The event was introduced by KGH Staff Governor, Jayne Chambers. Event speaker, Dr Olivia Stevenson, Consultant Dermatologist and Skin Cancer lead, talks about the causes of and managing common skin complaints and avoiding skin cancer. 

Your beautiful mind: tips on staying on top of your emotional and mental wellbeing

Designed to help you manage your emotional and mental wellbeing, providing you with practical tips on dealing with today’s worries and winter blues.  This session will help you develop a Happiness ‘toolkit’ using an effective framework from national charity, Action For Happiness.  Learn about the science of happiness and let us show you how you can develop positive strategies to safeguard your wellbeing.

The Below the belt event was held on 20 January 2023. Introduced by Lead Governor, Peter Woolliscroft and our speaker is Janine Cullen, Emergency Urology Nurse Practitioner.

The Living with Long Covid event was held on 18 May 2022. Introduced by Deputy Lead Governor, Mabel Blades and our speakers were Rudo Chimera, Clinical Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist and Chloe Thorpe, Occupational Therapist.
