Volunteering Roles

Our volunteers provide a life changing service to our patients and staff in so many ways.  If you can spare just a few hours a week to become part of our amazing team, you will be able to see the difference you can make.
 
It’s an amazing way to give something back to your local hospital - the one place that touches everyone’s lives in some way.
 
Here are the variety of roles available.

Administrator

Availability - Monday to Friday 08:30 to 17:00
 
Completing administrative tasks such as phone calls, filing, data entry, preparing clinical packs and more.

Buggy Driver

Availability - Monday to Friday 08:30 to 16:30
 
You will be driving the outdoor buggy and helping to transport outpatients and visitors around the hospital.
 
18+ only with full clean driving licence and 3 years’ experience driving. 

Care Cafe

Availability - Monday to Friday 10:00 to 16:00
 
The care café is a staff wellbeing support and run by volunteers.  This is a brilliant role to help support our staff in the café, you will be fully trained on our barista coffee machine and the café is an excellent role to help boost confidence and give you new skills.

Clinic Support

Availability - Monday to Friday 09:00 to 16:00
 
You will be contributing to the smooth running of the clinic. The tasks will include meet and greet, temperature taking, making drinks, and chatting to patients. You may also be asked to help support staff with answering the telephone, the security doors and help with minor clerical and cleaning duties.

Emergency Department Volunteer (A&E)– Age 18+ only

Availability - Monday to Sunday 09:00 to 22:00
 
We are looking for people to support our busy Emergency Departments (ED). You may be asked to help support the ED staff with minor cleaning duties, chat to patients and relatives who are waiting for test results or other treatment. You may be asked to support with refreshments and sandwiches for those who are able to eat and drink, check and re-stock all the areas.

Gardener

Availability - Ad hoc
 
Helping maintain the hospital gardens, planting flowers and fundraising for the gardens.

Macmillan and Oncology

Availability - Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:00
 
Macmillan volunteering involves looking after the reception area at the information desk. Oncology volunteering includes admin tasks and making hot drinks whilst communicating with patients.

KGH radio

Availability - Monday to Sunday 08:00 to 20:00

Response Runner

Availability - Monday to Friday 8:30 to 16:30 split into AM and PM shifts
 
Our Runners help deliver a much-needed service across the hospital by relieving staff of extra ad hoc jobs which could sometimes take up their precious time on the wards. They do this by collecting swabs and taking them to pathology, prescriptions to pharmacy, notes between departments, video calls for loved ones in hospital and much more.
 
The Runner is a vital role within our service and one that everyone enjoys!

Spiritual and Pastoral Care / Emergency Department (ED) pastors volunteers

Availability – Monday to Sunday
 
Our Spiritual and Pastoral Care service provide pastoral care to vulnerable patients and their families / carers. The role involves listening to and supporting with human and spiritual needs at a time of crisis and recognising Urgent Care patients and their families / carers can be disorientated, upset, distressed, and confused during emergency processes.

Ward Buddy

Availability - Monday to Sunday 09:00 to 19:00
 
We are looking for people to come along and help break the day up for our patients. As a Ward volunteer you will make someone’s hospital stay a little easier.
 
You will be volunteering alongside nursing staff, contributing to the smooth running of the ward, helping patients at mealtimes, engage them in activities or just spend time with them. You may also be asked to help support ward staff with answering the telephone and helping distribute meals.
