Techniques used before the treatment or a procedure starts
The play may include the one or more of the following:
- Use dolls or figures with real or toy equipment (Lego MRI scanner, Doctors set, cannulas/syringes (no needles) masks, bandages)
- Explain procedures through simple stories or picture books
- Child becomes the nurse, doctor or adult and plays out medical treatments
- Describe what they may see, hear and feel, using honest but age appropriate reassuring language
- Offer choices where possible (which arm, count down, sitting position, music or distraction choice.
