Launch of innovative patient portal for online access to letters

Mobile phone
In a move to enhance patient experience and streamline communication, we have launched a patient portal, enabling patients to access their medical letters online instead of waiting for postal delivery. The new system is designed to make healthcare communication faster, more convenient, and environmentally friendly.

More traditional paper appointment letters can be easily mislaid, which sometimes leads to patients arriving for appointments at the wrong time or even missing their consultations altogether. By providing access to hospital correspondence and information in a single place, for patients to view via their computer, mobile phone or NHS App, will help to reduce the number of missed appointments. It will also help to speed up the amount of time spent on admin when patients arrive for appointments.

What Does the Portal Offer?

The portal allows patients to securely view Outpatient appointment letters in real time. Accessible via smartphones, tablets, or computers, the system empowers patients to manage their healthcare more efficiently.

Benefits of the Portal

  • Faster communication: Letters are available instantly online, cutting out postal delays
  • Convenience: Patients can access their letters anytime, anywhere
  • Eco-Friendly: Reducing paper use aligns with the NHS’s sustainability goals
  • Improved accessibility: Features like large text, screen readers, and over 50 selectable languages make the portal user-friendly for individuals with disabilities
The portal is accessible through a secure login system, ensuring that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times. Patients will receive a notification via text when a new letter is available.

Feedback and future enhancements

We have already rolled out the system to over half our of departments and we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback, and the project will see the majority of our departments using the system by March 2025. This has lead us to plan to expand into more areas of the hospital.
