Spiritual and Pastoral Care Service (Chaplaincy team)
The Spiritual and Pastoral Care Service (Chaplaincy team) at University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) supports wellbeing, wholeness, and recovery by offering spiritual, pastoral, and religious care. We provide a safe and compassionate space to explore questions of hope, meaning, and purpose during times of illness, uncertainty, or change.
Our UHN Chaplaincy team is here for patients, visitors, families, and staff of all faiths, beliefs, and none. You do not need to be religious to access our service. Chaplains are members of the hospital staff and are professionally trained to offer confidential, non-judgemental support to everyone.
The Chaplaincy team offers support in many ways, including:
• A listening ear and a safe, confidential space to talk
• Pastoral conversations exploring meaning, purpose, and hope
• Support with spiritual questions, such as “Why me?”
• Emotional and bereavement support during illness, loss, or distress
• Inclusive, non-judgemental care
• Multi-faith religious support when requested
Chaplains regularly visit the wards and are always happy to see patients or visitors. They are available to listen, offer support, and provide practical help when needed.
If you would like support from the Chaplaincy team, please speak to a member of the nursing staff who can make a referral for you, or contact the Chaplaincy team directly by phone or email. You are also welcome to visit the Chaplaincy office.
A 24/7 Roman Catholic on-call service is available out of hours via the hospital switchboard (KGH and NGH). Chaplains from other Christian denominations and faith traditions are available for referrals during office hours, Monday to Friday.
The Chaplaincy team is supported by trained Chaplaincy Volunteers, who visit the wards during the week and on Sundays.
We work closely with a Multi-Faith Advisory Group, made up of local representatives from a range of faiths and belief communities, including Bahá'í, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Jewish, Muslim, and Humanist. Members of this group are available to visit patients when requested.
The Multi-Faith Chapel is always open and provides a quiet, peaceful space for prayer, reflection, or simply taking a moment of calm within the busy hospital environment.
