Cellular Pathology - Histology

A comprehensive range of diagnostic services on fixed, fresh and frozen tissue.

Types of service:
  • Fixed tissue - Routine diagnostic H&E stained sections. Futher immunohistochemistry and special stain techniques may be requested by the reporting Pathologist.
  • Frozen tissue - A rapid frozen section service is available by prior arrangement as well as direct immunofluorescence staining of frozen tissue sections. NOTE: Frozen muscle and nerve biopsy tissue can be sent to Oxford for specialist investigation but only by prior arrangement; in such cases clinicians are encouraged to send the patient to Oxford if they are well enough as Oxford provide a specialist service which is usually in the patient's best interests.
  • Fresh/ Unfixed Tissue - Some specimens requiring specialised techniques need to reach the department fresh/unfixed (guidelines are issued to theatre staff) but laboratory staff MUST be notified so that they can be given immediate attention. Fresh/unfixed tissue must not be sent out of hours.
