Cellular Pathology - Cytology

Types of services offered by the laboratory

The Cytology department deals with both gynaecological and non-gynaecological samples. Both specimen types involve the preparation and examination of cells which are viewed microscopically to look for signs of malignancy and/or infection.
  • Gynaecological cytology = liquid based cytology (LBC), where samples are taken in accordance with the NHS Cervical Screening Programme. The aim of this programme is to identify pre-malignant or malignant changes in the cervix. High risk Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) testing is also available as part of this programme and is carried out on site by our Microbiology department.
  • Non-gynaecological cytology = the examination of cells obtained from body fluids including urine, respiratory samples, joint fluid aspirates and fine needle aspiration (FNA) of cysts and suspicious masses. Technical assistance with the preparation of FNA slides can be arranged by pre-booking with the laboratory.
