Two KGH staff nurses receive DAISY Awards for the way they cared for their patients
A children's and an intensive care unit nurse have received DAISY Awards for their patient-centred care.
Skylark Ward Nurse Nancy Mlambo was nominated by Georgia, the mother of Joel, who was admitted to the ward, and made a lasting impression on them both.
Georgia said: “ She (Nancy) is an absolute ray of sunshine in a place where days can sometimes feel very dark and long and I have absolutely loved her caring for my child. “
Joel would check to see if Nancy was working as he enjoyed their interactions so much.
Georgia said: “What makes her stand out is that even on shifts where she was working but allocated to other patients, she used her own free time to come and see Joel and spend 10 minutes cheering him up and listening to his stories.”
This person-centred approach inspired Georgia to make this nomination.
ICU Nurse Brenda Dlodlowas nominated by both Nicholas, from Kettering, and Georgia, from Desborough.
Nicholas had been a patient in the intensive care unit (ICU). He said: “ I have vivid recollection of nurse Brenda. She was exceptional and warm and considerate. Nothing was too much trouble for her, and she was one of the people who saved my life. ”
Georgia described how her stepfather was admitted to ICU and in her nomination said Brenda supported her father-in-law, and the family as a whole, and managed their needs:
She said: “She (Brenda) shared tears, and laughter with us, listened to us reminiscing, took interest to find out who Tim was, listened to our fears about a future unknown, rationalised our thoughts, provided coffee and compassion.
“ Her competency, genuine empathy and compassion, commitment to her work, and her reassuring, calming presence, all ensured that we had total confidence in her .”
Brenda was presented her award by Bonnie and Mark Barnes, the co-founders of the DAISY Foundation, who were visiting the UK on the day of Brenda's presentation.
Brenda's holistic approach to nursing helped Georgia's family while her stepfather was in our ICU.
UHN Director of Nursing Robin Binks said: “I would like to sincerely thank Nancy and Brenda for the exceptional care, compassion and professionalism they have shown to their patients and families.
“The nominations for these awards show the very personal difference nurses can make during some of the most difficult moments in people's lives.
Nancy's kindness and reassurance clearly brought comfort to a young patient and his family, while Brenda's skill, empathy and calm support had a profound impact on patients and relatives in ICU. We are extremely proud of them both and grateful for the outstanding contribution they continue to make.”
