Whether supporting first-time parents, families facing unexpected challenges, or those on unique journeys to parenthood, our colleagues are committed to ensuring every family feels listened to, respected and supported.

This heartwarming story is a wonderful example of the difference our maternity teams make and the lasting impact of the care they provide.

A lifelong friendship, an incredible act of kindness, and compassionate maternity care at Kettering General Hospital have helped create a story that spans three generations.

When best friends Francesca and Daniella were born, their mums quickly became friends too. Growing up side by side, the pair shared countless memories, milestones and adventures, building a bond that would last a lifetime.

Years later, Francesca faced an unexpected challenge when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. While the treatment she received saved her life, it also meant she would be unable to carry a baby herself.

The news was devastating, but Francesca's story was far from over.

Having experienced the joy of becoming a mother to her daughter, Evangeline, Daniella wanted to help her lifelong friend fulfil her dream of parenthood. In an extraordinary act of friendship, she offered to become a surrogate for Francesca and her husband.

Following a successful embryo transfer, the family's hopes became reality when baby Oliver was born nine months later.

Throughout their surrogacy journey, the maternity team at Kettering General Hospital worked closely with both families to ensure they felt supported, informed and cared for every step of the way.

Reflecting on their experience, Francesca said:

“We had such a positive experience at Kettering General Hospital. Our midwives really took the time to focus on both of us and helped us put plans in place from the very beginning.

Having support from the Professional Midwifery Advocate with a special interest in surrogacy was invaluable. Throughout our journey, we felt that all our needs were met and everyone was aware of our plans, so we didn't need to keep explaining the situation.

Our surrogacy journey has been incredibly special. My amazing best friend gave us the most precious gift imaginable; she is truly an inspiration. Thanks to the support we received from the maternity team, we were able to focus on welcoming Oliver into the world. He is the most wonderful little boy, and we will always be grateful for the kindness, compassion and professionalism shown to us.”

Daniella also praised the care and support provided by the maternity team:

“The care we received at Kettering General Hospital was outstanding. Every effort was made to respect the wishes of both the surrogate parents and the intended parents.

The team guided us through labour, birth and the decisions we might face along the way. Throughout our journey, we were treated with kindness, respect and as individuals.

I cannot begin to describe the importance of surrogacy. It gives hope to people who may be facing some of the most difficult challenges of their lives, particularly around health and fertility.

Oliver is such a beautiful little boy; he lights up every room he enters. I will always hold a very special place in my heart for him.”

This remarkable story highlights not only the power of friendship and surrogacy, but also the personalised, compassionate care our maternity teams provide every day to families with unique needs and circumstances.

Today, the story continues with a new generation. Just as Francesca and Daniella grew up together, their children, Evangeline and Oliver, are beginning their own journey of friendship.
