Project Wingman

Doors to manual and cross check – staff at KGH get to experience the high-life as we’re visited by Project Wingman.

As the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic hit the NHS in March 2020, Project Wingman began. The project is made up of aircrew from all parts of the aviation industry who found themselves unable to work due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The crew then visit NHS hospitals across the UK to offer refreshments and a first class lounge service to our hardworking colleagues.

KGH have welcomed aboard Kris and Danielle – more used to working thousands of feet in the air – they helped to deliver over 100 hot drinks and treats to staff directly on the wards.

“As cabin crew, we’re used to talking to people and making them feel comfortable. In a way, for us to come to KGH to do this, is part of the same role” said Kris from EasyJet “We’re cabin crew delivering our same high quality service to NHS staff”

Kris and Danielle took off from the KGH Main reception with their trolley of goodies. They made stop offs at Clifford Ward, the adult Skylark ward and A&E before landing at their final destination - Middleton Assessment Unit (MAU).

“It’s our way of giving something back” adds Danielle, who works as cabin crew for British Airways.

“My mum work at NGH and last year I worked as a Healthcare Assistant at the hospital while I was furloughed”

“I had no expectation of how busy the work of an HCA would be. I knew it involved personal care, such as helping patients with their food and drinks; but the nothing could have prepared me for how busy the wards were.”

Kris states “I’ve worked as a first responder in the past and people don’t realise just what the NHS do and how busy they are”

“This is my local hospital and I was so pleased when Project Wingman came to KGH and I could offer my help locally” Kris adds.

Project Wingman will be supporting our staff for the next month or so, making surprise visits to wards and departments to offer their first class service.

As we come in to land, we’d like to thank Kris and Danielle for their time; as well as the many other Project Wingman volunteers at other hospitals across the UK.
