Play brings smiles, creativity and connection to our wards
Play in Healthcare Week is an annual event that celebrates the vital role play makes in the treatment and recovery of babies, children, and young people. Our play teams across Kettering General and Northampton General Hospital have been marking this week with visitors, activities and lots of laughter.
Across the week, the wards were transformed by a lively programme of special visitors and creative activities designed to give children and young people a welcome break from clinical routines. At KGH, panto characters from Laugh Out Loud Theatre Company joined familiar faces including Stitch, Sonic, Peter Rabbit and Paw Patrol favourites Chase, Marshall and Skye. Their visits brought high fives, laughter and plenty of smiles to patients, families and colleagues.
The week also created memorable opportunities for patients to explore, imagine and express themselves. Mini Moments Ponies brought Montego and Reuben to Skylark Ward, helping to create memories for children and their families. Patients travelled to new worlds with Odyssey VR, while Preacher The Storyteller filled the playroom with noise, laughter and enthusiastic participation from children and adults alike.
Creativity was at the heart of the celebrations too. Holly from The Raspberry Art Club brought an autumn sensory session indoors, where children made artwork from natural materials and explored different textures. Heather from Changing Faces added colourful face painting, Annabelle created glitter tattoos, and balloons ensured even the ward's youngest patients could join in the fun.
Play is far more than a distraction. It can reduce anxiety, support recovery and help children feel more like themselves while they are in hospital. The laughter, confidence and shared moments seen throughout the week showed the difference these experiences can make, not only for patients but also for their families and the colleagues caring for them.
Thank you to all our visitors, including Starlight Party Store and to our play teams for creating such a joyful and memorable week on the wards.
