Why Emma got involved in supporting her NHS colleagues

Emma joined the peer support network when it was first formed three years ago.

She said: “I thought that a peer support network for children’s nurses was something that was really needed and I was one of the early members when it was formed.

“We have a team of about 20 of us who work together to run the network and it has really helped to pull student children’s nurses and newly qualified children’s nurses together - especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Using our online twitter account we give advice to our members and we have more senior nurses and lecturers who help with the educational side.

“Students and new nurses have lots of questions and need advice on things like work placements, interviews, and their education.

“We help in lots of ways including having takeover days and weeks where we concentrate on one particular topic and may have interviews and other information posted onto the site.

“I have found being part of the network has been really rewarding, and has helped to build my leadership skills.

“Things I am particularly proud of include the impact of our childhood cancer awareness week 2021 (#CYPCANCERAWARENESS21 on Twitter). It included interviews with specialist cancer healthcare professionals, educational information and how to support families, and some universities used our content from this week as part of learning for students to join in with."

“I would encourage nursing students and all paediatric nurses to join us.”
