Macmillan Cancer Support Centre continues to help patients

Macmillan team with plaque

The Macmillan Cancer Support Centre at Kettering General Hospital has received a quality assessment award plaque for the way it supports people living with cancer.

The centre – which has been operating since May 2022 - achieved the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM) last year and since then has been going from strength-to-strength.

Pictured with the plaque, which has just arrived, are Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Lead, Danielle Bates, Macmillan Personalised Care and Information and Support Lead, Allie Gac, and Head of Nursing for Cancer, Ruth Giles.

In its assessment last year the support centre at KGH scored top marks (5/5)in all of the areas assessed. It aims to provide practical, emotional, and financial support for people living with cancer and its services now include:

  • A six weeklong Hope (Help Overcome Problems Effectively) programme – available five times a year - to support cancer patients who have finished treatment to help them move forward and manage their recovery with advice on a wide range of issues including diet and sleeping
  • Taking Control – condensed versions of the Hope programme enable support over two days or via a three-hour session
  • Look Good Feel Better – beauty and health and well being expert support for patients overcoming the physical impact of cancer
  • Welfare benefits – an appointment only service
  • Friends and Family Coffee Morning – 10am-12 noon on 3rd Tuesday of the month at the centre
  • Patients’ Coffee Morning – 10am-12 noon on 1st Tuesday of the month at the centre
  • Walking Groups – Weekly wellbeing walks are held every Thursday at 2pm at Wicksteed Park. Also at Rushden Lakes on the last Thursday of every month at 1pm. To book email. To book on for a walk at either location email kgh-tr.cancerinfo@nhs.net

The Macmillan Cancer Information Centre at KGH was shaped by local people living with cancer and brings together a range of vital cancer information and support services under one roof.

The new centre fills a much-needed gap in support for the 24,000 people living with and beyond cancer in Northamptonshire and is located near the hospital's main entrance.

It is open Monday – Friday, 9am until 4pm. No appointment is needed. You can also contact the centre on 01536 493888 or email kgh-tr.cancerinfo@nhs.net .
