Learning Disability Week 2019

Learning Disability Week runs between 17-23 June. This is an opportunity for us to think how we can support our patients who have a learning disability (LD).

Leanne Farmer, LD Acute Liaison Nurse and Chris Abram, LD Project Worker are visiting a number of wards across the Trust to promote Mencap’s Treat Me Well campaign. They’re asking staff to sign up to the pledge.

“The Treat Me Well campaign is really important” says Leanne. “We want all staff to be aware of the best way to support someone with an LD if they attend KGH through Accident and Emergency (A&E)”

Currently, if a patient is admitted to KGH through A&E, they will be admitted to Clifford Ward. If the patient is due to be with us for longer than 48 hours, they are admitted to the Harrowden C ward where possible.

“Keeping this pathway ensures that our patients have a continuity of care”

Chris adds “It can scary for someone coming into hospital. KGH is a big place and doctors and nurses use long words. For someone with LD, they might not understand what is being said to them”

Ideally when a patient with an LD enters KGH, they will have their own hospital passport. This is a booklet that gives details about the person and gives details about them.

At KGH, we have the Helping Me in Hospital booklet that we can complete when some is admitted. Like the passport, this will include information about their medication and any likes and dislikes.

“The booklet will also contain essential information for staff about how the person communicates, how they express if they’re in pain or they’re hungry.

It’s an individual insight into that patient” Leanne tells us.

“The responsibility for updating the booklet is left with the person, their family and carers. This way, the book contains the most up-to-date information”

Chris has an LD and has been working at KGH since 2010. He helps to support our LD patients and checks their paperwork.

“I’m from Kettering, I was born at KGH and I really enjoy working here. It’s like a second home to me”

A huge thank you to Leanne, Chris and all of our staff in supporting the Treat Me Well campaign.
