A volunteer who provides holistic therapies for people using the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre at Kettering General Hospital has done well in a national award.

Joanne Smeathers is runner up in the national Macmillan Cancer Support’s ‘Thanks to You Awards 2025’ in the With Heart Award category.

She received heart-warming nominations from people living with cancer as well as Macmillan Centre staff who have benefitted from the therapy support she provides each week which includes reiki, reflexology, aromatherapy.

Her nominators said: “Jo is kind, compassionate, and deeply dedicated to supporting patients. She takes time to listen, comfort, and guide them with care and respect, often going above and beyond her role.

“Her empathy and commitment have made a lasting positive impact, with patients valuing her support so much that many continue to see her privately after their sessions.

“Through her volunteering, Joanne helps people to manage pain, anxiety, fatigue, and sleeplessness.

“Her sessions create a space where patients can simply rest — emotionally, mentally, and physically.

“Her therapy room feels worlds away from the wards outside — softly lit, filled with gentle music and the scent of aromatherapy oils. Some patients drift into deep relaxation; others use the hour to talk, reflect or just breathe. “

For Joanne volunteering with Macmillan has been a way of giving back to the people who once supported her own family through cancer.

She said: “I don't see it as me making a huge difference. It's just about helping someone who's having a tough time feel a bit better about themselves. That's a nice feeling.

“Reiki helps calm the mind and body through stillness and energy flow, while reflexology can ease the nerve pain or discomfort caused by treatment.

“I'm just one of many people out there who give their time to help others. I'm grateful I can do my bit to give back."

Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager Mim Langschova said: “Jo is a truly amazing individual, dedicated to her clients and colleagues. Nothing is ever too much trouble for her. Her positivity and commitment inspire everyone around her.

“Patients describe her sessions as 'phenomenal', saying they feel calmer, lighter and more able to cope. Joanne's compassion and commitment embody the very best of Macmillan's values — supporting the whole person, not just their illness.”

Macmillan Head of Nursing Cancer at KGH, Ruth Giles, said: “We hugely appreciate Jo's unwavering commitment and the incredible support she provides to both patients and colleagues. Her dedication truly makes a difference and inspires us all.”

The centre at KGH was also nominated for the Northamptonshire Active Communities Awards 2025 held on November 19 by North Northants Council.

Although they didn’t win the nomination was for the centre’s Macmillan Wellbeing Walks held each week at Wicksteed Park and monthly at Rushden Lakes.

Mim said: “The Walk initiative provides consistent, volunteer-led walking sessions for people living with and beyond cancer.

“The programme fosters physical activity, peer support, and community connection. It has built strong partnerships with local organisations and offers a sustainable model requiring minimal resources.

“The walks reduce social isolation, encourage recovery, and promote a hopeful outlook. It is a safe and welcoming event that empowers participants to share experiences and improve their well-being. It exemplifies how simple, community-driven efforts can have a profound impact.”
