Today we are proud to launch our new Group Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals (AHP) Strategy. Launched by Leanne Hackshall, Director of Nursing and Quality at KGH and Sheran Oke, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Patient Services at NGH; the new strategy explains how this will signal the start of the future for these three professional groups. During the development of our strategy, it became apparent that our Nurses, Midwives and AHP’s had a clear vision to inspire a culture of providing only the best quality of care. From this, the acronym VoICE was born, (Vision of Inspiring Care Excellence).

The collective voice of our staff is ambitious, forward thinking and patient centred. The group values are at the core of the VoICE showing our commitment to be ‘dedicated to excellence’. It also reflects our ambition to be the first group hospital in UK to achieve Pathway to Excellence designation on both sites.

Alongside the launch of the strategy, we have also held an on-line celebration of our Nursing, Midwifery staff and our Allied Health Professionals.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our staff and the hard work they have continued to deliver over the past year. I am acutely aware how tough the last year has been for the NHS and our staff. It’s taken a real toll on everyone, but through the pandemic we have seen some excellent work being achieved” said Leanne Hackshall.

Today’s celebration has highlighted the good work done by teams across the hospital. From continuity of care through COVID from our maternity team to the ever-changing needs and requirements to COVID and this was handled by our Infection Prevention and Control Team.

The on-line celebration is an opportunity for all staff across the Trust to recognise the work of our professional staff supported by their colleagues. The day has seen presentations and videos from subjects as diverse as improvements in processes, information on our new Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre to Ward Accreditation.

“Another thing that I am very proud to have also launched today is the ‘More Than My band’ campaign” said Leanne.

“It’s a campaign that looks at and challenges the language we use around our Trust. Colleagues may address each other according to their band. This is not a conscious decision for most, but a ‘learned’ language. They might talk about something being the responsibility of the band 7 or that their band 3 admin can pick up that piece of work” explains Leanne.

This campaign is aimed at all staff across all levels to think about the language that they use and recognise that we are all more than our band. We have names, families, and outside interests. This should not be forgotten. Being respected in your workplace leads to happier staff and studies have shown that happier staff deliver a higher quality of care.

“Being addressed by your job band is a learned language that we want to stop at KGH. We are all so much more that that” says Leanne. “This will benefit our staff and our patients”

“The teams Nursing, Midwifery and AHP teams, do such and amazing job, day-in day-out, it’s been pleasure to celebrate their achievements today” added Leanne.
