KGH plants trees to celebrate the Jubilee

Jubilee celebrations

Kettering General Hospital has taken part in national celebrations to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on June 2 by planting 100 trees in its 33-acre grounds.

On June 1 Group Chief Executive Simon Weldon, and the hospital’s chaplaincy, estates, and health and wellbeing teams, placed a Jubilee plaque next to where some of the saplings have been planted in the hospital’s Pocket Park.

The Trust’s Chaplain, the Rev Neil Tyrer, said: “The hospital has taken part in The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) - a major national tree planting initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Jubilee.

“The initiative invites people from across the United Kingdom to Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”, and we thought it was a very fitting way to mark the occasion which will benefit patients, staff, and members of our local community who all use the Pocket Park on the hospital site.”

KGH Health and Wellbeing Committee engagement support officer, Alice Power, said: “The trees will also help offset the Trust’s carbon footprint and they are all native British trees so they will help support inserts, birds and other wildlife communities in our Pocket Park.

“Our estates team planted the trees on March 7 to fit in with growing season and had to work very hard in a short-space of time to plant them all.”

Mr Weldon said: “The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative has been enthusiastically taken up by a very large number of individuals and organisations across the country including Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, and major companies.

“I am very pleased to mark Kettering General Hospital’s part in this fantastic environmental project and I hope that the extra trees in our Pocket Park will benefit patients, staff and members of our local communities for many years to come. They will also remind us of the Queen’s contribution to the nation over the last 70 years.”

There is still a chance to take part in the project. Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year. For more details go to: https://queensgreencanopy.org/.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.
