From hard hats to habitats: Students get hands-on experience at Kettering General Hospital
A group of students had the chance to get hands-on at Kettering General Hospital (KGH) recently, helping to create new habitats for wildlife as part of the development of our new Energy Centre.
Working alongside colleagues from Integrated Health Projects (IHP), the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine delivering the Energy Centre project, the students from Isebrook School built two bug hotels and two hibernacula on our hospital site.
The activity forms part of work to help reduce the environmental impact of the development and provide replacement habitats for insects and wildlife including frogs and toads.
Before getting started, the students were given an introduction to the hospital, the impact of our Energy Centre development and the role the new wildlife habitats will play. They then donned their PPE and worked together using hand tools and different materials to bring the bug hotels to life.
As well as supporting our environmental work, the day gave the students an opportunity to experience a working construction environment and develop skills including teamwork, communication, listening and following instructions safely.
It was fantastic to welcome the students to KGH and see their enthusiasm, teamwork and pride in what they created.
