Community created scrubs for #TeamKGH

Today we took delivery of nearly 60 sets of scrubs courtesy of Scrubs Up For Northants NHS. These were delivered by Catriona and Jakki, Area Co-ordinators from the group.

Scrubs Up For Northants NHS are a group of volunteers who cut, sew and deliver scrubs for NHS organisations and care homes across the county.

“We have been pleased to have been supported by Weetabix” says Catriona. “They have been very kind in offering to buy 10,000 meters of fabric for us. This will make around 2,000 pairs of scrubs”

“I work for Weetabix and knew they’d want to help” says Catriona. “After pondering it for a while, I messaged senior management at Weetabix late one night. I got a reply early the next morning, along with a promise of help. We are so happy to have this fabric supported by a large local employer”

The idea of community made scrubs was initially started by a nurse in the north of England, with local chapters popping up across the country. The local chapter began in March this year.

“I wanted to get involved for a few reasons” says Catriona. “My daughter is an A&E nurse and I wanted to help her and her colleagues. In addition, my mum makes costumes for the Corby Gang Show. When that was cancelled, I knew mum would need a project. I suggested this as an alternative”

Jayne is the #WeCARE team leader at KGH “I’ve learned that people across our community want to help. Projects like this offer people a practical way to help the NHS.”

Jakki is an area coordinator for the group “This gives people a sense of purpose and routine during these unusual times” Jakki said.

“We have 200 volunteers in Northampton alone and at least a thousand across the county as a whole” adds Jakki. “They’re not all busy sewing. We need people to deliver the fabric, be a collection point for completed orders, look after our admin and monitor our social media”.

The group are also making laundry bags, scrub hats and bands to secure facemasks. Apart from the scrubs, not all items need to be sewn by machine. Some can be completed by hand.

“It’s not too late for people to get involved” Catriona says. “We need people to volunteer to sew, deliver or help out in other ways. We also need fabric for scrubs and laundry bags. If people contact us through the Scrubs Up For Northants NHS Facebook page, we can advise about what is needed as the fabric used for scrubs is quite specific”.

Thank you very much to Scrubs Up For Northants NHS and all of the amazing volunteers working hard to help NHS staff across the county and for our delivery today.
