Interventional Radiology
Interventional radiology uses minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases. Many of these procedures used to require open surgery.
Procedures where interventional radiology are performed include biopsies, drainages, Hickman line insertion, Nephrostomy insertion, Hysterosalpingogram and Radiologically Inserted gastrostomy (RIG).
These procedures can be performed under guidance of Computed Tomography (CT), ultrasound or fluroscopy (continuous x-ray image on a monitor).
This can be carried out on both inpatients and outpatients.
The referring clinician or specialist nurses will provide information regarding the procedures including preparation and follow up.
