Early Career Research Award

We are delighted to announce our first joint Research initiative across University Hospitals of Northamptonshire that will support you in developing your research knowledge and skills.
 
The launch of the Early Career Research Development Award will:
  • Fund you to complete a 15 or 20 Masters Module in a Research at an East Midlands University.  Between 12 to 14 places will be funded.
  • Opportunity to apply for a £5,000 grant to complete your own research project following your Masters module.
  • Network with other likeminded early career researchers across University Hospitals of Northamptonshire.
  • Support you in your development to become a Researcher and/ or Clinical Academic.
This is open to all clinicians across University Hospitals of Northamptonshire and is a competitive application process.
  • Closing date Stage 1: Application for Masters level modules 30th August 2021.
  • Applications to submit follow on Research Grant 1st November to 21st January 2022.

Who can apply?

  • Open to all clinicians across University Hospitals of Northamptonshire.
  • You do not need to have had any previous research experience, we want to grow the number of active researchers.
  • We will fund you to complete a 15 or 20 Credit Masters module an East Midlands University that is Research Related. This might be an Introduction to Research Methods or be more specific such as Qualitative Research Methods.
  • Once completed you can then apply for follow on funding for a research grant of up to £5,000.
  • Places will be distributed evenly across Kettering General Hospital & Northampton General Hospital.

How do I apply?

Stage 1: Funded Research Modules

Applications closed 30th August 2021.
Please explain:
  • Your motivations for wanting to complete the research module
  • Your research area of interest
  • Outline research project – title, brief description ( we anticipate that this will be developed in full at Stage 2)
  • Your University you wish to complete the module with
  • If you will be topping up the 15/20 Credit Research module from CPD funding or self funding to complete PG Cert or Masters. There is no expectation to do this, but we are interested to know if you wish to add to the funding from the Early Career Research Development Award.
  • All Early Career Research Development Award holders will be expected to present a poster at the 2022 University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Research and Innovation conference. We will provide guidance and support for you to do this. 

Stage 2: Applying for £5,000 Research Project funding

After you have completed the 15/ 20 Research Module, you have the opportunity to apply for a £5,000 grant to support you undertaking research.
 
The application window to apply for the grant is 1st November to 21st January.

  • Deliverables/ Milestones
  • Risks
  • Financial breakdown

Your Research Project

Following on from your Research Module, you have an opportunity to apply for £5,000 funding to support a research project of your choice. We anticipate that you will complete your research project in 6 months. Your research project is likely to require ethics approval. We can support you with this and there is an online tool to help you to determine whether it is classed and research and should be managed as such. https://www.hra.nhs.uk/approvals-amendments/what-approvals-do-i-need/
The funding covers any costs associated with the research and will cover, but not limited to:
  • Your salary costs to be used as backfill for you to complete the research
  • Any direct costs associated with research

Poster Presentation at Research and Innovation Conference

Part of being a researcher is sharing your research findings with others to add to knowledge in that field and to change practice. At our Research and Innovation Conference in Autumn 2022, we want you to be part of this as you embark on your journey as a Researcher.

We will provide support to help you produce your poster and see this as a fantastic opportunity for you to be part of our University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Research and Innovation conference. It is anticipated that this will be the first of many conferences you present at, whether this is by poster, abstract or keynote address as your research career develops.
