The Bereavement Service is able to provide information and support following the death of a loved one.

What to do following the death of a loved one

There is nothing you have to do immediately after your loved one has died.  You can get in touch with a Funeral Director once you feel able to discuss the details of the funeral but we will look after your loved one until your Funeral Director has made the necessary arrangements.

What needs to be done first

Please make an appointment with the Bereavement Office at Kettering General Hospital by telephoning 01536 492714 between 10am and 4pm; Monday to Friday excluding Bank Holidays.

The Bereavement Office will ask you for your contact details and whether the funeral is to be a burial or cremation.

Once the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death is available, the Bereavement Office will arrange a time for you to come in and collect it. They will also be able to give you other helpful advice and return any of your loved ones’ belongings.

Appointments are usually arranged on weekdays between 10am and 4pm. Please do not come to the hospital without first arranging an appointment. If you are uncertain about what to do, or are worried and upset and need to talk to someone, telephone the Hospital Ward and ask for the Nurse in Charge. More information, giving practical help and advice following the death of a loved one, is available in our Bereavement Booklet “What Do You Do Now?” which is available on each Ward.
