The Medical Examiner's Office is able to provide information and support following the death of a loved one.

What to do following the death of a loved one

You can get in touch with a Funeral Director once you feel able to discuss the details of the funeral and prior to contacting the Medical Examiner's Office, as they will need to know if the funeral service will be a cremation or burial. We will look after your loved one until your Funeral Director has made the necessary arrangements.

What needs to be done first

Please telephone the Medical Examiner's Office at Kettering General Hospital by telephoning 01536 491541, 01536 493627 and 01536 493575.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will ask you for your contact details and your relationship to the deceased.

Once you have contacted the Medical Examiner's Office with your details and funeral wishes, and when the Medical Certificate of cause Death has been completed, this will be electronically sent to the Registration service (Registrars).

We will then contact you and inform you this has been sent, informing you of the next steps, and give helpful advice reference your loved ones belongs being collected by the funeral directors.

You do not need to attend the hospital to collect any paperwork. If you are uncertain about what to do or are worried and upset and need to talk to someone, the Medical Examiner's Office is available for support. Unfortunately, there are no viewing facilities available at Kettering General Hospital. Please speak with your nominated Funeral Director for information surrounding viewing of your loved one.
