For Visitors

Health and Hygiene

All visitors and patients entering and leaving the ward should cleanse their hands using one squirt of gel. If you are unable to use the gel, please wash your hands with soap and water, at the nearest sink (at many ward entrances).

If someone wishes to visit but feels unwell; for example, with a cough, sore throat, cold, rash or upset stomach, then they should not visit you in hospital. Please telephone the ward prior to visiting, where staff will be happy to advise, on when it is safe to visit.

Many wards have restricted visiting hours, and allow only 2 visitors at a time, discouraging young children. This is to allow patients to rest and staff to carry out their duties.

Please don’t sit on the beds, visitor chairs are provided. These measures help reduce the risk of infection.

We advise where possible that you take home the patients dirty clothing in a sealed plastic bag to wash and bring in clean clothes. This will help the patient feel and cleaner and fresher and reduce the risk of infection. Special clothes bags are available on the wards.

Smoke free environment

As From 1 April 2006 KGH has been designated a totally smoke-free site - both inside and out.  The smoking ban is across the whole of the NHS as part of the Government's campaign to improve the health of the nation.

Mobile Phones

When visiting patients please refrain from using a mobile phone in any of the buildings. Mobile phones can interfere with monitor displays and pacemaker devices.

Food

We generally do not encourage you to bring food into the hospital from home, as there is a risk from food poisoning, if it is not stored correctly during transportation or in the hospital.  You should NOT bring in food that needs to be heated or cooked. You may bring supplies such as fresh fruit and juices that the patient enjoys. If you do bring food in to the hospital ask staff to advise on the best way to store it safely.
