Kettering General Hospital has completed a major £4.7m refurbishment of its main medical ward blocks – the Harrowdens.
At the end of last week (July 11) the hospital put the finishing touches to the final phase of the refurbishment, upgrading Harrowden C.
The first patients to move back into this area arrived this week and on Thursday (July 15) the ward is set to be fully up and running.
This completes an intensive 17 month refurbishment programme which started in the Spring of 2009 to transform KGH’s main medical wards into state-of-the-art facilities – Harrowden A was completed in September 2009 and Harrowden B in February 2010.
Service manager Maxine White said: “Patients who have been to the Harrowdens before the refurbishment say that the new wards look like they have been totally rebuilt rather than just refurbished. They are in fact entirely new in virtually every respect.
“Everything has changed – we have new floors, ceilings, windows, new equipment, new lighting and the ward bays themselves have changed from six bed bays to three bed bays with ensuite toilets and showers.
“All of these areas are now same sex and the number of single rooms available to us has doubled from six to 12.
“Because the change has been so great we think that it would be good to have a new name for the ward block.
“We are therefore in the process of asking the staff and public Members of KGH Foundation Trust to come up with a new name to mark this new era of ward development.
“Whoever comes up with the winning suggestion will get the honour of officially opening the new wards.”
