Healthier Together – to be taken forward by new Clinical Commissioning Groups

The work being done by the Healthier Together programme will be taken forward in Northamptonshire by the county’s two new Clinical Commissioning Groups from April 1

Last year an NHS change programme was developed called Healthier Together to look at how hospital services could be best improved across the South East Midlands.

It was looking at options for closer working between the five hospitals in Kettering, Northampton, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Luton and Dunstable.

In Northamptonshire Corby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Nene Clinical Commissioning Group are taking on the responsibility of buying health services for local people from April 1.They will work closely with all of the local hospitals and health services to develop better care for patients.

One of the drivers behind Healthier Together programme was to develop specialist centres which ensured that patients get the best possible care, particularly for operations which evidence shows is best done at bigger higher volume centres.

But some local people, and local MPs, were worried that some of Healthier Together’s initial plans would be too sweeping and mean some areas of the region losing out on vital services.

Corby and Nene CCGs will be responsible for moving forward the work begun by Healthier Together in Northamptonshire. Other CCGs will take forward the work for the other hospitals in the review area.

Healthier Together chairman Dr Paul Hassan, said: "Given the changed NHS landscape, local NHS leaders across Bedfordshire, Luton, Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes have given their full support to plans for local CCGs, the new GP-led clinical commissioning groups, to lead the next phase of improving local health services."
