In answer to your request as to whether the nursing staff on wards generally work a 2 shift system or a 3 shift system to cover each 24 hours

I can confirm that all wards work a Long Day and Long Night system.  The Long Day in Medicine is 12 hours, and in Surgery 11.5.

Each ward has some option to add in an Early or a Late shift but this primarily for staff to make up hours which are owed to the Trust and not normally as part of usual working.
